Jack (John) Frederick Schweigert, a loving father, grandfather, distinguished attorney, and dedicated community leader, passed away at his home in Honolulu on August 15, 2024, at the age of 77. Born on July 26, 1947, in Buffalo, NY, and raised in Erie, PA, Jack was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. After law school, he moved to Hawaii, where his career left a lasting impact in both law and community service.
Jack was renowned for his extensive work in environmental and civil rights law. His landmark cases include Stop H-3 Association v. Coleman, which set a precedent for historic preservation, and Outdoor Circle v. Castle Estate, where he fought to protect Kawainui Marsh. His influence extended to cases like Haig v. His expertise was recognized in over 31 published opinions, reflecting his deep impact on the legal community.
Outside of his professional achievements, Jack was a pillar of his community, serving as president of the Lions Club and participating in various social outreach programs. His tireless efforts to improve the world were matched by his devotion as a father and grandfather. Predeceased by his wife, Valerie, who passed away in 2006, Jack is survived by his two children, Carly and Scott, and his five grandchildren, all of whom continue to honor his values and principles in their own lives.
A service to celebrate Jack’s life will be held at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu on October 5, 2024, at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the ACLU of Hawaii in his memory
